Cunda Island Beaches & Best Swimming Spots

Milos Cunda Editorial May 20, 2025

Cunda Island and the surrounding Ayvalık archipelago are home to some of the Aegean’s cleanest waters and most unspoiled coves. After exploring the island’s rich history and culinary culture, letting the sea cool you down is the perfect final touch to the Cunda experience.

Ortunç Cove — The Clearest Waters

Cunda’s Isolated Natural Aquarium Located on the southwest of Cunda Island, within the Ayvalık Islands Nature Park ecosystem, Ortunç Cove is an isolated spot where pine forests meet the sea at the water’s edge. With its crowd-free character and Blue Flag waters, it offers a serenity-focused experience. Its protected natural environment means the seawater maintains aquarium-like clarity. The area also suits morning and sunset walks as well as nature photography. As a privately managed facility, entry is charged — a measure that regulates visitor numbers and preserves the quiet, isolated atmosphere. Access is by private vehicle only.

Arka Deniz

Taking its name from its position on the opposite side of Cunda’s main settlement, Arka Deniz (“Back Sea”) is one of the island’s unspoiled, isolated recreational areas. Although foot traffic is minimal outside peak season, it becomes one of the most-visited spots during summer. Set against views of the Kazdağları mountains and the outline of Hasır Island directly across the water, it offers an unmatched swimming experience. Within the area, luxury establishments like Kesebir Beach and Scala Beach sit alongside the municipal beach, and it is common to see beachgoers who have simply brought their own chairs and umbrellas. Access is easy by private vehicle, but the ‘Cunda çataltepe’ and ‘Cunda eski yol’ minibuses along the old road are a very convenient alternative. Our hotel, Milos Cunda, is within walking distance of Arka Deniz.

Çatal Tepe

Named after the fork-shaped rocks along its coastline, Çataltepe Beach is one of Cunda’s relatively unspoiled areas. The water is shallow, cool, and exceptionally clear. Water shoes are recommended for comfort over the rocky sea entry. Private establishments operate in the area, though visitors are welcome to arrive with their own chairs at no charge. Small food and beverage outlets provide refreshments, but bringing personal supplies is advisable for a fully comfortable visit. Lying just beyond Arka Deniz, Çatal Tepe is reachable by the ‘Cunda çatal tepe’ minibuses.

Coves Discovered by Boat Tour

The most beautiful coves in the Ayvalık archipelago are accessible only by boat. Day-trip boat tours depart from Cunda’s waterfront in the morning and wrap up toward evening, typically with meals on board, visiting pristine, off-the-beaten-track spots. With swimming stops in turquoise waters, these tours rank among the most memorable experiences a Cunda holiday has to offer.

Pateriça

Also known as Patriça, Pateriça sits within a National Parks zone and is protected under UNESCO World Heritage designations. What makes Pateriça particularly special is the nature-immersed sea experience it provides — surrounded by olive trees and along unpaved dirt roads. The water is very shallow, requiring visitors to walk some distance before it deepens, which can be an advantage for families with young children. The site is not accessible by public transport; a private vehicle is needed, though the unpaved road conditions are worth bearing in mind.
